Hardcover Verified download. Tanenbaum has overhauled his second edition to take into account the massive shift to Internetworks and the IP protocol. As usual, he does an excellent job of elucidating the subtleties of the technology while maintaining his witty style. The book's key strength is that it combines solid theoretical underpinnings and clear explanations with consideration of the non-technical aspects of networking.
These include market acceptance some wise words on why ISDN failed, for example , the politics of "standards" and day-to-day pragmatic "getting it done" issues.
Tanenbaum's broader consideration enables the book to avoid the trap of becoming an unworldly academic text.
It gives "Computer Networks" its licence to function as an indispensable everyday working reference. I lend it to colleagues to photocopy the odd section, and they always end up downloading their own copy. Enough said! I gave this book a 9 for including some of the old and dying technologies that lack even instructional value, at the expense of newer technologies that are seeing wide deployment.
Grist for the fourth edition, I guess: This review compares the following four books: This book covers all of the essential material that is in the other books but manages to do so in a relevant and entertaining way.
This book is very up to date as seen by the release of the 5th Ed when the 4th Ed is barely two years old. There are lots of practical exercises using wireshark and the companion website is actually useful and relevant.
The attitude of this book with regard to teaching networking concepts could be summed up as "try it out and see for yourself". One interesting thing to note is that the socket programming example are all in Java. Next up is the Peterson and Davie book which covers everything that Kurose and Ross discuss but is slightly more mathematical in how it goes about things.
But once you're past that you see the beauty of the book: It i I was forced to read Tanenbaum in university and I hated it, partially because I didn't know if it was relevant.
It is very well organized, it goes through all the layers in a good speed so it's perfect to get an understanding which protocol goes into which layer.
You can skip certain parts e. I skipped layer 1 and can continue just fine after it. The keywords are marked bold you can just cross read entire pages and spot the bold words to check if you're now leaving out something important.
Oct 21, Mj rated it did not like it. From the perspective of an instructional systems tech major and in which this book is used for instructional systems tech majors, this is not an effective book. It starts with the introduction chapter, which is nothing very outstanding, but then the next chapter is about the network layer already. It has this bottom-top approach in terms of the network hierarchy and that is not how one is preferred to learn about networks, unless one is already proficient about the concept of networks and this becomes just a guide.
The book also has this way of making things sound easy and funny at times but it is only trying hard to make some concept sound easy, which is even more frustrating.
The metaphors used in the book to describe concepts are not at all effective. So if one's a total techie then this book would make a lot of sense but that's about sums up the function of this book.

It gives a detailed overview of all layers of the OSI stack, starting from how data is represented and compressed in electric circuit, up to HTTP protocol and media format encoding. All of that is complemented by "homework" at the end of each chapter, which often encourages to think outside of the box.

This book is magnificent, it talks about everything and nothing about networking! It talks about every technology in some sort of story telling manner, at the same time it doesn't get into details of any subject.
It's like a beautiful short story book for computer literates of course ; that draws a complete panoramic canvas about every confusing, high tech name out there. You can read this book many times and still find it necessary to read it again! Great book. This book explain the theory part of data communication and computer networking.
